We stopped at the Visitor Center and each of the kids got a Junior Ranger coloring book. After they each colored one picture, they earned a Junior Ranger badge and certificate. Here they are proudly showing them off.
We visited the park at night to see the volcano. The picture's not the greatest, but you get the idea. This is Halema'uma'u Crater glowing at night.
We took a drive down Chain of Craters Road and marveled at the lava along the way.

We visited Thurston Lava Tube. Daniel wasn't so sure about it even though it was partially lit.
We even ventured into the unlit part of the lava tube. We had one mediocre flashlight. This part of the lava tube goes 1000 feet and is completely dark. We did not go the whole way. Hannah didn't mind the darkness at all but Daniel thought it was too scary.

We checked out the Jaggar Museum. It was interesting to read about the different types of lava, see equipment used to measure volcanoes and earthquakes, read about the volcanic activity, etc.
This picture was taken at Volcanoes National Park. If you look close, you can see snow on the mountains in the distance.
Because of high amounts of sulfur dioxide gas, we were unable to drive Crater Rim Drive. We also intended to go to the Kalapana Lava Viewing area to see flowing lava. However, you couldn't see any lava from the view area so we didn't go. Hannah was excited for days before our trip to see "the hot lava." We wish we would have been able to during our visit.
